Two Victims Revealed in Brown University Shooting as Police Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.

Both young individuals who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.

She served as vice-president of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also posted condolences on social media, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”
