We are verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
