The hosts secured a 93-run victory

Pakistan brought an end to the reigning champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by achieving a 93-run victory in an exciting and hard-fought opening Test in the city of Lahore.

The Proteas, who had a 10-Test unbeaten run in Test cricket ended with victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in the month of June, were bowled out for 183 chasing 277.

Starting the day on 51-2, they lost first-innings centurion Tony de Zorzi leg before wicket to left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi to the third delivery of the day to shift the finely-poised chase in Pakistan's favour.

Slow left-armer Noman, who secured 10 wickets for 191 runs in the match, removed Tristan Stubbs for 2 and clean bowled Dewald Brevis, who offered some resistance with a rapid 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid also took advantage of sharp turn to end opening batsman Rickelton's innings - he faced 145 balls for 45 - and Afridi returned in the afternoon session to dismiss the lower order with a impressive exhibition of reverse-swing bowling.

He trapped Verreynne lbw for 19 and bowled Subrayen and Rabada to secure the win.

It was each team's first match of the 2025-27 Test championship cycle and propels Pakistan straight into second place behind table-toppers Australia.

The win was built around key performances of 93 by opener Imam and, crucially, all-rounder Salman Agha which boosted them to three hundred and seventy-eight.

After that slow bowlers Noman and Sajid took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they did in their series victory over England the previous year, to sustain their lead.

The next and final Test starts on October 20.
