Asian fast-fashion powerhouse Shein has chosen the nation of France as the site to launch its debut permanent physical outlets.

Shein plans to run retail spaces inside shopping centers first in Paris, followed by a handful of other locations such as Dijon, Reims, Grenoble, Angers and Limoges.

France's strong presence in the fashion world was a natural choice to become Shein's testbed for physical stores, the brand stated.

Shein is now primarily recognized for its low-cost and stylish garments, but has drawn negative feedback regarding its ecological footprint plus employee treatment.

Moving Beyond Temporary Stores

The company once operated limited-time shops in locations including the Spanish and French capitals, but has never operated a permanent physical shop.

The fresh retail spaces are being opened through a partnership with retail property group the Societe des Grands Magasins.

This French firm runs both BHV Marais as well as Galeries Lafayette shopping destinations which will host what the brand terms retail spaces inside larger stores.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The outlets are expected to generate around 200 jobs within the country, according to the brand in a statement.

Noting that the collaboration was designed to breathe new life into urban centers as well as major retailers in the country.

With France as the choice as the testing ground to experiment with brick-and-mortar stores, the company hopes to serve French shoppers and the wider retail sector, according to the company.

Web-Based Start and International Operations

The fashion retailer, that delivers to 150+ countries worldwide, has predominantly run via internet platforms through its website and app.

Established in China back in 2008 while being based in Singapore, Shein has come under examination regarding its manufacturing of quick-turnaround clothing.

This operational approach swiftly creates inexpensive clothing in line with contemporary designs, but has drawn negative attention for its environmental impact.

Labor Practices and Supply Chain Concerns

Concerns have also been raised about the working conditions throughout the company's production network.

An examination published in 2024 by Swiss advocacy group the Public Eye organization discovered that employees at certain manufacturers previously worked for 75-hour work weeks, despite Shein promising to enhance working environments.

  • First permanent stores from Shein within France
  • Partnership with SGM for shop-in-shop concept
  • 200 new jobs anticipated to be generated within French borders
  • Environmental and labor concerns persist around the clothing company
