A inquiry agent integral to the legal action brought by Prince Harry and several claimants targeting the publishing group of the popular tabloid has stated his autograph on an earlier testimonial document was a “forgery”, the high court has heard.

Gavin Burrows, linked to the gravest allegations of illicit intelligence gathering made by multiple prominent individuals including the music icon and the activist, retracted his supposed statement, declaring it was “wholly fabricated”.

Background of the Alleged Statement

The private eye had supposedly asserted in a testimonial from 2021 that he and his associates obtained data by hacking voicemails, intercepting landline phones and placing listening devices in automobiles. He also allegedly said he had been employed on behalf of the Sunday publication.

The publishing group is accused by the group of conducting or authorizing unlawful activities such as employing inquiry agents to position surveillance equipment inside cars, deceptively obtaining personal files and gaining entry to private phone conversations. The company rejects the accusations and is opposing the case.

Retraction and New Allegations

Several of the individuals have informed the high court they embarked on the legal action against the media group based on evidence allegedly obtained by the investigator.

The witness had before withdrawn his supposed testimony in last year. In a recent detailed witness statement made on a recent date, and disclosed by the court on this week, he reiterated his denial, declaring he had at no time performed any illicit operation on behalf of the company.

In the new testimony, he stated he did “not identify” the alleged witness statement on 16 August 2021”. He stated he was of the opinion it was “prepared by others”, that the autograph is not mine”, and did “not accept the accuracy of a great deal of the information”.

Burrows stated: “I do not recognise the prior witness statement of 16 August 2021 and I am convinced that my signature on that statement is a fabrication. A great deal of it is not composed in my style of speaking. Moreover, the details of the testimony are largely inaccurate.”

He stated further that he had “at no time” carried out operations for the Mail On Sunday or the Daily Mail, with the exception of one job concerning the business magnate that was free from any illegal activity”.

Circumstances of the Initial Statement

The witness said he was on heavy medication after a severe physical assault, and consuming excessive alcohol, when he was reached out to by a former journalist, a whistleblower convicted of phone hacking, who sought assistance with research on accusations of spying against publications.

He was referred to a contact, an individual, who was described as a legal assistant and was paid a sum a session for advice.

His testimony indicated he was informed lawsuits targeting publications were likely to be resolved without trial, as the publications did not want the exposure or cost of a trial, and were portrayed to him as a “ideal scheme” and a “lucrative opportunity”.

The investigator, who said he had stopped working for newspapers in that year, said he had stated to Johnson “a hundred times that the publisher were not one of my employers”.

Present Legal Situation

The witness was at first a testifier for the group, which features David Furnish and others, but is now the focus of debates about if he will be called as a witness for the court case.

A barrister, for the defendant, requested the court to permit him to cross-examine Burrows, while David Sherborne, for the group, made an request to call his evidence as rumor.

The judge allowed the barrister seven days to determine whether he wanted to apply for a court order to call Burrows, and informed him if Burrows provided evidence that was at odds with the testimony they had gathered, then he could request to consider him as “adverse”.

A subsequent pre-trial hearing in the case is expected to take place before the year’s conclusion.
