"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."

Portland additionally secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the team to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.

"So, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
