Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Team While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection update

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as the two players set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
