Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Backlash
Figures from across the political divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and vile comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Political Ranks
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
