Advocacy Groups Alert Financial Hold May Enable Forced Labor
A consortium of over seventy legal, religious, and advocacy entities across the US has raised alarms regarding the delaying of eighty-eight million dollars in government funds allocated for victims of modern slavery.
Assistance Programs in Jeopardy
According to a collective communication, the DOJ has suspended funding for over a hundred service providers that help victims escape their traffickers and obtain essential services such as emergency shelter, therapy, and personalized care.
"Allowing this money to disappear would enable human trafficking and threaten lives," the communication emphasizes. "Numerous areas will lose their only service provider, leaving survivors with no safe emergency housing."
Appeal for Intervention
The group is pressuring legislators to push the executive branch to restore the financial support to support numerous victims across the country.
This appeal is in response to reports that the federal government has rolled back initiatives to address human trafficking, even as representatives reject any retreat on anti-trafficking actions.
Effects on Local Areas
- Several assistance providers lost their financial backing as of the last day of September.
- In the absence of these funds, victims may lose access to crucial assistance such as emergency housing, mental health care, and representation.
- Exploiters could operate with impunity, increasing risks for vulnerable populations.
Administration's Position
In response to inquiries over the frozen funds, the Justice Department clarified that funds allocated by lawmakers would be distributed in due course, but added that past recipients might not get financial support in the future.
Future appropriations will be decided based on the leadership's goals, the department commented.
Past Endorsement
The document also highlights that the legislative branch has repeatedly approved to fund these services over the past 25 years, underscoring the vital necessity of properly financing essential services to assist individuals and stop further abuse.
